We’re excited to share that the Bungaban wind energy project has received State Development Approval! This is a huge step forward in our commitment to deliver new, economical, and reliable clean energy to Queensland’s homes and industries.
Bungaban will generate 1.4GW of clean energy, enough to power one in three Queensland households and significantly cut down on carbon emissions. Our project raises the bar with minimal remnant vegetation clearing, showcasing our dedication to protecting the environment.
The project will create 1,000 jobs during construction and inject approximately $500 million into the regional economy, supporting local businesses and families. Our ongoing engagement with stakeholders, especially our host communities and landholders, has been essential in shaping Bungaban’s design, ensuring the project meets local needs and expectations.
John Martin, Windlab CEO, stated the approval brings Windlab one step closer to delivering new, economical and reliable, clean energy to Queensland’s homes and industries – at scale - with first energisation possible, as early as 2028.
“From the strong economic benefits and environmental stewardship to the strategic land use and a robust plan for grid connection –the project just stacks up,” Mr Martin said.
For nearly three years, we’ve collaborated with the community and Traditional Owners to develop a design based on their feedback. This includes harmonising with agricultural activities in Wandoan and Taroom, incorporating mustering laneways, yards, paddocks, and watering points, implementing biosecurity practices to protect local agriculture, and developing a workforce accommodation strategy considering housing, socio-economic factors, local content, infrastructure, and legacy impacts. This approach maximises environmental and local benefits while minimising disruptions, supporting regional economic growth, and enhancing the local way of life.
With the State Development Approval in hand, we’re now moving forward with the next steps, including Federal EPBC Act approval and financial close. We’re confident in our balanced approach to sustainable development and look forward to advancing through the EPBC assessment process.
Mr Martin added, “Our ongoing engagement with stakeholders, especially our host communities and landholders, has been essential in shaping Bungaban’s design, ensuring the project meets local needs and expectations.”
“We’re pleased to be able to share in this important milestone with our stakeholders and are dedicated to continuing our collaborative approach as we progress.”
